There are so very many surface type fish species that it is impossible to list them all here. what are the popular species suitable for a community aquarium? The most notorius are the three genera and several species of Hatchet fish and also the Archer fish (needs to be aclimatised to fresh water). These stay very close to the surface most of the time. Others that are not quite as attached to the surface are the members of the Danio family and Guppies are also a surface fish. There are others but you should be able to find most of the ones I've mentioned at good aquarist shops.
The rule of thumb for stocking levels in a freshwater aquarium is 1 inch of fish per gallon of aquarium. For instance, five 1" guppies in a 5 gallon tank, or ten 3 inch cichlids in a 30 gallon aquarium.
