you do not have to mix your oil and gas in a metal can. the metal cans are generally a safety can designed for storage of fuel. try not to mix more fuel and oil than you can use in a 30 day period as the fuel starts to separate and will go bad
I use 30-1 in mine.
Gap is .20 or .30 depending on fuel mix.
A 1975 Chrysler 30hp outboard requires a 50:1 fuel to two cycle oil mix.
I have a 1983 IT175 Yamaha and the fuel mix is recommended by Yamaha at 28 to 32: 1 I use 30:1 ratio. Hope this helps
I use a 1-gallon and a 2-gallon plastic gas can (one for regular fuel and one for fuel/oil mix) to store my fuel and I have never had a problem with the fuel going bad. However, it is known that fuel will get stale after 30 days - that may be where your problem lies. Get a smaller container if you don't use very much fuel in a 30-day period. Or, you might try adding a fuel stabilizer product with your fuel.
