The IF function can assign a value to a cell based on a logical test.
This is what the IF function is for.
=IF(logical test,value if true,value if false) Commas must be in the right place
For example if you want the value 100 if A1 is bigger than A2 and the value 0 if not.
=IF(A1>A2,100,0)

The If function. Say you have a set of cells with exam scores in them, and based on a pass mark of 40, you want to show which are passes, and which are fails. You can do it with an If function. If the first mark was in A2, then in B2 you could put the formula:
=If(A2>=40,"Pass","Fail")
The first part tests if A2 is greater than or equal to 40. If it is, the Pass is displayed and if it isn't, the Fail is displayed. They are both in quotation marks because they are pieces of text.
