The animals have very similar sequences in their DNA.
That humans are part of the natural world and evolved at the same time as other animals. We are primates, relatively naked apes. Our closest cousins are chimpanzees/ bonobos and we share a common ancestor with them about 6 million years ago. Going further back in time we, (and chimpanzees), share an ancestor with gorillas and we all share an ancestor with the orang-utan about 14 million years ago.
Crocodiles and birds share a common ancestor. This can be seen by comparing the internal anatomy of the two. Dogs and Dolphins also have a common ancestor. Their skeletons again are both distinctly mammillian. The ancestor of dogs and dolphins and the ancestor of birds and crocodiles will again share a common ancestor, but you will need to go much further back. I am not sure of the timescales but we are talking tens to hundreds of million years.
As the continents moved further apart, natural erosion of the coastlines removed and added to the basic shape over billions of years. Much of the evidence relates to the similarities of plants and animals found on now separate continents. Geological evidence points to Antarctica was once further north and had a tropical climate!
