To date, no galaxies are rectangular in shape.
I think elliptical galaxies are the galaxies you are referring to. Scientist normally describe them as a flatted disk shape. These galaxies contain mainly older stars.
A "spiral" galaxy.
They are shaped like a round galaxy and they are flat
There are three types of galaxies, all of which are the same, with the exception of their shapes. There are the Elliptical galaxies (football-shaped) the Spiral galaxies (like the Milky way; vortex-shaped) and Irregular galaxies (all shapes other than spiral and football shaped).
An elliptical galaxy is round. A spiral galaxy is shaped like a spiral.
That sounds like the description of an elliptical galaxy.
An egg-shaped galaxy is called an elliptical galaxy. In the Hubble Sequence, they would be E3 or E5 Galaxies. However, there is a galaxy called the "Fried Egg Galaxy" NGC 7742 which looks - not surprisingly, like a fried egg; however, it is a unbarred spiral galaxy.
Most galaxies are shaped like a disk. It's the way they are formed. One of the most beautiful is the Sombrero Galaxy. [See related link for a picture]
The milky way galaxy is a barred spiral shaped galaxy.
