They use xenon gas bulbs. These are a form of halogen lighting.
Some of the major advantages of the HID bulbs begin with the fact that they have up to ten times the life of halogen bulbs. They also are resistant to shock and vibration.

HID headlights are far more brighter than normal Halogen bulbs that are normally in headlights. HID are often thought of as safer because they have a blue glow to them and resemble daylight more than normal bulbs.
HID kits are illegal no matter what the "color temperature rating" is. It is illegal and unsafe to install HID bulbs into a headlamp that was not originally designed to accept them.
Assuming the question is referring to incandescent light bulbs (the ones with the glowing filament), Argon is the gas used.Argon is a harmless gas found in air, and is used because it cannot react with the hot filament.

If you're smart, you don't. "HID kits" are widely available, but they are (all) illegal and dangerous. The only legitimate/safe/legal HID conversion is to install complete HID headlamp assemblies designed, built, tested, and certified as such. Halogen headlamps must use halogen bulbs. If your headlamps have already had an "HID kit" installed, remove it and put the correct bulbs back in.
All high-intensity discharge (HID) bulbs, and all fluorescent bulbs, require a ballast, which is a device that limits current. It can raise the voltage and/or heat the bulb cathodes.
Any HID head lamp bulb above 6000K are illegal.
