What happens to a plant in the dark?

Since plants conduct photosynthesis during the day, the glucose which they make during the day or when the sun is present is used in cellular respiration during the night. In addition, the energy they have stored during the day is just used for survival at night.

Does respiration occur in both plants and animals?

Respiration occurs in both animal and plant cells but photosynthesis occurs in plant cells. Respiration is defined as the oxidation of glucose to release energy, both plant and animal cells respire glucose.

Do plants respire and how?

Great question! Not as we do, with lungs. which is an active process, but they do breathe by a passive process. Both plants and animals carry on a process called respiration which occurs on a cellular level and involves an exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Plants mostly do this in their leaves, which in some ways are similar to our skin (which, incidentally, is the largest organ in our bodies). The process by which all respiration takes place is called diffusion - plants 'breathe' through their leaves - the really cool thing is that they 'exhale' - ready? oxygen...which is why we want trees - because they breathe by 'inhaling' carbon dioxide and 'exhaling' oxygen for us to use in our bodies to do our own respiration.BTW - Animals breathe differently than plants. We do it in two places, in our lungs - as most people are aware - and also in our body tissues. Our lungs take in oxygen (that came from the plants respiration) and we put it in our blood, and at the same time release the carbon dioxide from the blood and put it into the atmosphere so the plants can use it. In addition, we also have a second type of breathing that occurs in all our bodies called tissue respiration. In our tissues, we take the oxygen from the blood and put it in the tissues, and at the same time take the carbon dioxide from the tissues and put it in the blood to be taken to the lungs.

Can you water plants at night?

If it's about indoors, potted plants it really doesn't matter much. Evaporation is less at night, so you have more of the water actually reaching the plants. This can save you some water if you're watering your garden.

How do plants photosynthesise?

Plants photosynthesise by trapping sunlight and taking in carbon dioxide(Co2) through the stomata which are holes found at the underside of the leaf and release oxygen through the same hole.

Why can't plants respire at day?

Plants need to photozynthesis during day does not enable them to respire.

Do plants respire all day and all night or only at night?

They respire through out the day.

Do plants respire 24 hours a day?

yes i think so

How plants respire?

Plants have two types of respiration arobic and anerobic Plants do not breathe like humans, although they respire. This is when they absorb oxygen from the air around them and in return, release Carbon Dioxide. This is different from photosynthesis where they release oxygen and take in carbon dioxide. They photosynthesise to produce glucose, and then respire to convert that glucose into energy. During the day, plants give out more oxygen, and during the night, plants give out more carbon dioxide.

When do plants do photosynthesis and respiration?

In general, green plants photosynthesize during the day or when light is on the leaves, and respire at night, or in the dark. As its name implies, photosynthesis is a light dependent process.

Why does photosynthesis not continue during the night like cellular respiration does?

plants respire during the day as well the rate of respiration is lower than the rate of photosynthesis in the day

Do plants only respire at night?

they breath all the time like us, beacuse if they did not breath through the night they would die.................................................................................. this is wat i am saying i dont no if it is true

Do plants respire in the day?

No, it is a common misconception that they do. Infact people think they respire as well as photosynthsise, except that more photosynthesis takes place. According to new research this is completely untrue, and the answer is no

How many hours a day do a plant respire?

I belive its from sunrise to sunset

When do plants use carbon dioxide night or day?

Plants use carbon dioxide in the daytime as part of photosynthesis which occurs in the chloroplast. They use the CO2 and make sugars. People breath in oxygen and breath out carbon dioxide, plants do the opposite. They breath in carbon dioxide and breath out oxygen. One small "technical" detail that should be mentioned. Plants really don't breath, they respire. People breath. So, at the night, the plant cells respire more than they photosynthesise, so they get rid of more carbon dioxide than oxygen.

Why do plants wilt shortly after watered?

During day time when transpiration occurs watering of plants removes the air from the soil and in the abscence of oxygen root cells can not respire aerobically, hence uptake of water is affected. When the loss of water due to transpiration is not compensated by absorption of water by the roots, wilting is observed in these plants.
