I have been using REGULAR in my 2000 3.5 Trooper and never had a problem.

My 1999 Trooper gets about 16 MPG with mixed highway and city driving. I believe that it has the same drive train as the 2001. If I drive at moderate speeds on the highway, I can get 19 MPG.
The tranny uses a preset program to shift that is computer based. You use your right foot on the gas pedal to get the trooper up to speed for the shift to happen in the normal driving scenario.
The factory sticker on mine says it should be .008 on both intake and exhaust.
the firing order is 1-3-4-2 counterclockwise on gas or diesel engines, that year should have a 4 cyl.
93 octan, runs cooler. less likely to warp valves.
