Sharpsburg (antietam) & Gettysburg
Antietam
Major General George B. McClellan was commanding the Federal Army of the Potomac at the Battle of Antietam.
Antietam
Battle of Antietam (or Sharpsburg) stopped General Lee's first invasion of the North. The second invasion was stopped at Gettysburg, PA. In a technical sense, Antietam caused the invading Army of Northern Virginia to retreat from its already launched invasion of the North.
It was the first battle in which Lincoln exclusively planned the Union's tactics.
Antietam
Lincoln was disappointed that General George B. McClellan had allowed Confederate general Lee to escape after the Battle of Antietam. The result of Lincoln's disappointment was the replacement of McClellan by General Burnside.
General Robert E. Lee planned and led the Army of Northern Virginia across the Potomac River and into Maryland. On September 17, 1862, his army the Union's Army of the Potomac would engage each other in the Battle of Antietam.
