A 1969 Camaro! The 1970 models were late to market as the result of a UAW strike, as I recall. But then, a 1969 is still a 1969 model, and 1970 models were the next generation, so I guess it depends on your definition of early 1970.

The answer to this particular question is very subjective. I will attempt to answer the question in an unbiased manner. There are five generations of the Chevrolet Camaro, and they are as follows: First generation: 1967 to 1969 Second generation: 1970 & 1/2 to 1981 Third generation: 1982 to 1992 Fourth generation: 1993 to 2002 Fifth generation: 2010 to present (at the time of this writing) Each generation has it's bests depending on what the buyer wants. The most popular and sought after regular production Camaros are as follows: 1969 SS/RS 1970 Z28 1977-1981 Z28 1982 Indy 500 Pace Car 1984 Berlinetta w/ digital gauges 1985-1992 IROC-Z / Z28 (the convertible versions of these are worth more) 1992 25h anniversary edition 1997 30th anniversary edition 2002 SS 2002 35th anniversary edition 2010 SS If my opinion matters any, as the question implies, my personal favorite would be a 1970 & 1/2 Z28. Just before the gas shortage of the 1970's restricted horsepower figures.
The first Chevrolet Camaro was the GM F-body Platform created on September 26, 1966. Secong generation camaros were created 1970-1981 model years. Third generation camaros 1982-1992. Fourth generation ran up until 2002 but then production slowed and camaros became concepts. Then, in 2009(to present) fifth generation camaros were born.
