ABBA's contribution to the genre of pop/Rock Music in great, indeed. While so many others have come and then gone just as quickly, ABBA's music is still going strong. They are almost as popular today as they were 30 years ago. The theory behind their success is the quality of the songs themselves. They are ageless and they appeal to a wide range of music lovers globally. Not many artists can claim this.

Well that's a broad question, but I'll suggest four answers:

(1) They were the first act of the rock era to achieve massive international success from outside the U.S. or U.K. Between 1972 and 1983, Abba achieved more than 40 chart singles around the world, including 21 that peaked at number 1. All of them were recorded in Sweden.

(2) They were pioneers of digital recording. The studio they built in Stockholm, Polar Studios, recorded some of the top acts of the late 70's and 80's, including Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Ramones, Roxy Music, Celine Dion and dozens more. Abba's last studio album, The Visitors (1982), is considered to be perhaps the first major digitally recorded album.

(3) They were pioneers of the short-form music video. While other acts had made "promo clips" for years, Abba were the first to hire a professional film maker (future Oscar nominee Lasse Hallstrom) to produce creative films, which they then used strategically to sell themselves to new markets.

(4) They achieved unbelievable sales success, especially considering that they did it with relatively little success in the important American market. They're the best selling band ever, after only The Beatles, with over 375,000,000 records sold (according to Universal Music as of 2010).
