It is difficult to pigeon hole The Beatles so easily since they covered a lot of musical ground including Rock and Roll, Rock, Hard Rock, Country, Blues, Ballads, Psychodelia, Instrumentals, Soul, Folk, Indian, Symphonic, ie. not stuck in the rut of just one musical genre. However, it is most commonly accepted to assign them as "Rock."
Well, I-tunes categorizes it as Rock, so that's what I would call it. Technically, probably pop or pop rock, but I like to keep all my Beatles under one genre on my iPod, so I just put them all as rock, even though some albums get put under pop.
Wikipedia called it 'folk rock.'
Rock and Pop, in general.
The Beatles have explored many genres in their musical evolution from rock'n'roll in a strip-club in Hamburg to British Invasion, pop in the 55,000 seater Shea Stadium, from the experimental/psychedelic/progessive rock in the big studio of Abbey Road to hard rock/proto-metal scream in The White Album.
Here are a few tracks to listen to differences:
Rock'n'roll: Roll Over Beethoven
Blues rock: Yer Blues
Folk rock: Rocky Raccoon
Hard rock: Birthday
Prog rock: A Day In The Life
Proto-metal/Heavy Metal: Helter Skelter
Ska: Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da
Experimental: Tomorrow Never Knows
Psycedelic rock: Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds

Yes.
The song "Imagine" was written by John Lennon of the Beatles. In the recording industry when you use another artist's copyrighted music it is called a "cover" and usually you pay to use another's music.
