About the only war heroes that Rome honored with statues were Pompey, Caesar and Marcus Agrippa. Pompey's statue was self-erected in his theater. Most of the war hero statues were of the emperor as he was the head of the armies and, at least in Roman eyes, the hero. However, the Romans did make busts of famous men, among them military leaders.

The theater of Pompey was/is a vast structure built by Pompey as a means of self-glorification. In addition to having living quarters, it was a temple and a theater. It had a huge assembly hall where political meetings could be held. ( The senate was meeting there when Caesar was murdered). Even today the remains of the walls can be traced as some of them are incorporated into modern buildings.
Gaius Julius Caesar, dictator of the Roman Republic, was assassinated in the Theatre of Pompey in Rome on the ides of March (March 15), 44 BCE, by as many as 60 or so senators who feared that Caesar plotted to overthrow the Republic and become king. The great irony of Caesar's murder is that, after his death, the Republic was plunged into civil war, eventually overthrown and replaced by the Empire, headed by the first emperor, Caesar Augustus (formerly Octavius, Caesar's adopted heir). Another great irony is that he died at the foot of the statue of Pompey: the man who had opposed him, and who Caesar had fought and beaten in several battles before Pompey was murdered by the Egyptians.(see related link)
