Lait is a masculine noun in French. You cannot put 'de la' in front of it, because of 'la' which is a feminine article; 'de l' has to go in front of a word beginning with a vowel sound, like in 'de l'eau' (some water); 'des' cannot be used because it is plural: you say 'des bouteilles de lait' (milk bottles) but not 'des laits' (milks) when you want to say there is a greater quantity. 'Du' is for non-countable quantities, like sand, water or other liquids. 'Du lait' is correct and translates as (some) milk.
'Lait' is 'Milk' in English.
