Depending on your area, different items can be put into a recycling bin. Paper, glass, cans (metal and aluminum), cardboard, aluminum foil, empty airsole cans, mail, magazines, and frozen food packages are all basic things that can go into a recycling bin.

The items that can be thrown inside the green recycling bin are: paper, plastics, metal cans, empty aluminum aerosols, and cardboard.

Paper items may include: books, magazines, sheets of paper, mail, and newspapers.

There are several types of plastics but not all types are acceptable to be placed into the green recycling bin. Types 1 (PET/PETE), 2 (HDPE/PE-HD) and 4 (LDPE/PE-LD) are acceptable. These types are located in the recycling triangle on many plastic items like bags and bottles.

Metal cans range from food cans to soda cans. There really is no set limitation to the types of cans so it is rather metal cans in general. Just in case, check if the can has a recycling label (triangle) on it. If it is acceptable, then place it inside the recycling bin. Most of the time, metal cans should be acceptable.

Aluminum aerosols include: deodorant, air spray, and hair products. The exception is the fact that the aerosols have to be empty to go into the bin.

Cardboard items can range from cardboard itself to boxes to egg cartons. As long as it is made out of cardboard, it is acceptable.

If you are unsure if what items can go into the bin, you can take it to your local recycling site to check. Also, you can make a little bit of money for plastic and aluminum cans and bottles.

The exception to paper is that it cannot be shredded. The reason why there is a green recycling bin in the first place is because the factory sorts the items and the manufacturers use them to create new items. This makes the process energy efficient but also it does not expend our natural materials. Shredded paper cannot be sorted and at times, it can jam the machinery.

It is also important to note which items cannot be thrown inside the bin. These items include: batteries, glass bottles, food waste, plastic types 3 (PVC/V), 5 (PP), 6 (PS) and 7, which are the other plastics. Clothing, shoes, electrical materials, juice cartons, and polystyrene are the other items that cannot go inside the green recycling bin.
