Toleration Act of 1689
The Puritans were granted the right of public worship under the Maryland Toleration Act of 1649, which permitted freedom of worship for all Trinitarian Christians but not for Catholics. This act reflected the Puritans' desire for religious freedom while still maintaining restrictions against Catholicism.
Public worship is when a group of believers gather together in a designated place, such as a church, to engage in communal acts of worship, such as singing hymns, praying, and listening to sermons. Private worship, on the other hand, is the personal and individual practice of worshiping God in one's own time and space, through prayer, meditation, and reading of scripture. Both public and private worship are important aspects of the Christian faith.
The Edict of Nantes, issued in 1598 by King Henry IV of France, granted religious tolerance to the Huguenots, a Protestant minority. It allowed them to practice their faith freely and hold public office, thus ending decades of religious conflict in France.
Christopher Lloyd's religious beliefs are not publicly known. He has not openly discussed his religious affiliation in interviews or public statements.
God sets forth His official design for worship and the church in the Holy Scriptures. Acts 17:24,25,31 "God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him [His Son, Jesus Christ] from the dead." Acts 18:28 "For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publickly, showing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ." Colossians 1:18 "And he [Jesus Christ] is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence." All desiring to turn from darkness to light will find that God is not keeping His design for worship and the church a secret. Matthew 5:14 "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid." Philippians 2:15,16 "That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain." Acts 4:20 "For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard." For a believing believer, home is where the Word lives.
The provision on freedom of religion in the Philippines Constitution is found in Article III, Section 5. It states that the free exercise and enjoyment of religious profession and worship shall be guaranteed, provided that it does not offend public morals, public order, or other constitutional rights. The government is prohibited from establishing a state religion.
