Archaeologists think that Atlantis was the Greek island of Santorini. A great part of this island collapsed due to a massive volcanic eruption some time between1645 BC and 1600 BC, at the height of the Minoan civilisation. It is thought that the myth of Atlantis preserved a memory of this event. This island had the best known Minoan archaeological site outside Crete. The Minoan civilisation was a Bronze Age civilisation which flourished in the nearby island of Crete from the 27th century BC to the 15th century BC. It was not actually the Greek civilisation, but it was its forerunner. This Minoan city was destroyed more than 900 years of the foundation of Rome.

The Minoan ate squid and fish and grew three types of wheat, barley and rye. Vegetables were beans, chick peas, fava beans, lentils beans and wild vegetables, such as artichoke, asparagus, chicory, endives, radish, orka, purslane, saw thistles, vetches, wild leeks, and wild mustard. Their fruit was grapes and olives. Meat was from boar, birds, cattle (which was domesticated) deer, goats, pigs, sheep rabbits, and wild game. They roasted the meat before stewing it. Barley bread, goat cheese, honey and olives were important. They drunk barley beer, mead (wine sweetened with honey) and herb-flavoured wines.
