English is a germanic language, as in northern European based. It's influenced by almost every other language family in the proximity, including Romantic (Italian, French, Spanish, Romanian) and even Semitic (Arabic, Hebrew) language families.

Trying to classify the English language in any language family will raise a lot of difficulties.
