There are multiple answers I could give, as there are numerous taxa of mammals containing three species. Also, there are always debates as to which species are actually species and which are only subspecies (after all, taxonomy is artificial).

There are then three recognised sub-species of long-beaked echidna, as listed above. As also indicated in the first answer, the fine line between species and sub species is not clearly defined, and debate continues regarding the classification of the long-beaked echidna.
