There is a strong genetic component to autism and Asperger's Syndrome (AS) as shown in twin studies, but it doesn't necessarily mean that a person will inherit it from a parent. There is a greater likelihood of having AS if someone in the family has AS or autism than in the general population. If one child in the family has autism or AS, there is an increased chance that a second child will have autism or AS. If two children in the family have autism or AS, it is much more likely that other children will also have autism or AS.

Children of men over age 40 are more likely to have children with autism spectrum disorders than men who are under age 30 when they have their children. The researchers had not determined whether this was due to sociocultural factors, more genetic mutations in sperm-producing cells as one ages, or something else.

The article "Combination of Early Detection, Timely Treatment Hold Promise for Autism" indicates that older fathers and mothers, low birth weights, shorter pregnancies, and too little oxygen during birth might "be associated with an increased risk for autism spectrum disorders".

Another study shows that mothers who take the epilepsy drug valproate while pregnant are more likely to have children with autism. These are early findings, so valproate might not be the cause, and it might instead have more to do with which epileptic women are prescribed valproate.

In the United States, the places with the lowest rates of autism are in the southern parts of the country and the highest rates are in the northern areas. It was highest in places with the greatest rainfall. So autism spectrum disorders might be associated with staying inside, which could mean less Vitamin D from sunshine or greater exposure to household chemicals. Or, it might be associated with pollutants in the rain. A correlation has been found, but the cause has not yet been determined.

What year aspergers syndrome was intoduced?

Hans Asperger first wrote a paper about some characteristics of aspergers in 1943 (he did some research on a group of boys in the 1930's). Back then and up to the 1960s Asperger's was known as autisic psychopathy. A woman curious aobut the studies of Han's Asperger encouraged the name to be after the founder. Hans Asperger's information or rather data on Aspergers was not translated into English and brought to US till around 1994 or so.

How do you make friends when you have Aspergers Syndrome?

While it can be more challenging to make friends when you have Aspergers Syndrome, I believe there is still good reason to have hope. Society as a whole is becoming increasingly aware of Aspergers and Autism and more accepting of people who are on the Autism Spectrum. Take for example, the TV show, The Big Bang Theory. While it is never actually stated, I highly suspect that Sheldon's character is based on an individual who has Aspergers, and he is certainly an endearing fellow who has a close-knit group of friends whom he can count on. There are plenty of examples in real life as well of people who have Aspergers Syndrome who are living full, productive lives, have jobs, friends and many other accomplishments to their credit. Don't put too much pressure on yourself , striving for the hundreds or even thousands of so-called "friends" that a lot of young people have on their social media pages. Many would question how real any of these friendships really are. Start with one person and go from there. When approaching a person in your efforts to begin a friendship, I have read about many success stories that involve individuals with Autism taking a very forthright approach, telling people from the start about their condition. Explain to people whom you are interested in getting to know better that you have Aspergers and tell them what it's all about. Explain that it is sometimes difficult for you to read body language. Ask them if they'd mind giving you tips and advice from time to time in conversation to help you work on these skills. If sometime is not receptive to this, chances are that you don't really want him or her as a friend anyways! As the parent of an individual who has Autism, I know that I cannot truly understand and appreciate the challenges that you face as a person with Aspergers, but hope that of my suggestions can be of some help to you.
