In the debate around the ratification of the Constitution in the United States in 1788, those in favor of the Constitution and its concept of a strong centralized government were called Federalists.
The Federalist Party was a political coalition of itself. They were formed by a group of individuals in the 1790s who wanted a strong government.
They wanted a stronger national government because the constitution was to weak, so with a lot of different and separate people in the government no one person or group would get to much power.
