When you say ancient Hindus , your question is very difficult. Hindus modern practice it self is very old in which so called BRAHAMANS groups of People were mostly said to be more respected because they were mostly the one who practiced Hinduism theoretically , wrote rules and theories , made rules , give ideas to the rulers .. Etc etc.......

It depends what you mean by 'cultural group'. A Hindu's cultural group is obviously Hindu in the religious sense however, as with any religion, anyone from any genetic heritage can be a Hindu.
