They adapt do it to wash. But more with the answer, A hippo's habitat is like were you find crocodiles however crocodiles don't live with hippo's. They spend most of their time asleep in the smelly dirty pond, bathing, or under the water.

These days, they are found in good numbers in rivers and lakes of Uganda, Sudan, Somalia, Kenya, Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa etc. They usually prefer rivers or permanent water sources which are nearby lush green grasslands.
