There was no free oxygen when the earth began and when life began on the earth. Eventually single organisms developed in the oceans that released oxygen as part of their metabolic activity. After millions of years, enough free oxygen was present in the oceans and in the atmosphere to support the development of life that depended on oxygen.

If there had never been any oxygen at all in the universe, the development of the planet earth would have been very different, since there would have been no oxygen to combine with hydrogen to form water, and life as we know it would never had developed.
