The epiglottis is a movable flap of tissue attached behind/under the tongue which blocks the entrance to the trachea (windpipe) when food is swallowed, thus protecting the lungs by forcing the food to pass over the trachea and instead go down the esophagus into the stomach.
On another hand, talking while eating is not the most attractive habit. No one wants to see chewed-up food!

∙ 12y agoYou can, but since you are using the same orifice for both activities, it will be a sloppy garbled mess. Chew, swallow, then speak and for gawds sake close your mouth when you chew.
You can eat and talk at the same time, but to a limited extent. First it is considered bad manners to talk and eat at the same time because it's disgusting to see food being chewed and processed in someones mouth. Second because obviously the food takes up space within the mouth making it difficult or even impossible to enunciate or pronounce certain words, sounds, or letters correctly. And lastly there is always the ever painful biting of one's tongue or inside of one's cheek while attempting to do so.

If you talk or laugh while eating since your talking or laughing your trachea opens so that you can make sound and if you swallow something it will go down your trachea and you will choke.

If you talk while eating, and you happen to be a toddler, your Mum will tell you off. If you talk while eating, and you are older than that, people may think you are a bit of a pig.....
