After Oliver Cromwell became the Lord Protector he banned many things, such as Christmas, working on Sundays, the Christmas turkey, football and dancing round the maypole, just because of his 'puritan' belief. He also closed parliament, and took away 50 MP's that he didn't like. Also, in 1653 Cromwell chose 140 new MP's who he know would support his views.
He also lived life as King, and many saw him as King. He gave radical orders.
His son ruled briefly before resigning as Lord Protector and then the monarchy was restored (the Restoration) sweeping all thelegislation the Puritans had put in place aside. Theatres reopened and those who were involved in the execution of Charles I were pursued. The Parliament that was restored was overwhelmingly royalist however the relationship between Parliament and the Monarchy had however been changed forever and would never be the same again. A republic had briefly been put in place albeit the role of Lord protector was in effect no different to that of a King. The Army would be always technically be accountable to Parliament not the King, it is just the Army not Royal (unlike the Royal Navy and Royal Airforce). However the Army is full of Royal regiments and recruits still swear an oath to the monarch! The Puritans continued to have an influence in the Church of England although not officially becoming known as lower church and keeping the anti catholic sentiment going in England to this day. Nowadays the Puritan movement has become known as non conformist. Many Puritans unable to continue their beliefs in England left and became prominent in the life of the new Colonies such as New England, founded Harvard and are held to have influenced the attitudes of current day US in its beliefs in hard work at the core of society.
I believe One of Cromwell's son took his place, but he was treated "differently".

Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector- and he didn't rule Scotland.
He confiscated large amounts of it from the Irish Catholics and brought in Protestants from Britain and gave it to them.
