In Sept. of 1862 as the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia went into Northern territory(Maryland) for the first time,Gen. Lee made as part of his plan,to attack and defeat the Union force then holding Harper's Ferry. This was important because of the location of Harper's Ferry in relation to where the largest part of Lee's Army was going to be during this campaign. The possible danger was that this Union force(if not defeated) could cut-off the supply lines and communications for Lee,in other words prevent Lee's Army from returning to Virginia. To accomplish this Lee sent part of Jackson's Command to surround and capture the place. The confederates did this resulting in the capture of some 12,000 + - Union troops and about as many small arms,as well as a number of cannons and other supplies.
