Lets pretend you have a baby Chao.You turned it white with a hero character.then you gave it swim animals.then it grew up.now its a hero swim chao.then you gave it handful of swimming animals after it grew and now it looks different than before.ok,so its a hero swim chao.but since you gave it swim animals,it now becomes a hero swim swim chao.its the same for the dark run run chao,too.

There aren't any animals that give your chao quills. What you need to do is raise them from infant level with lots of green (running) chaos drives (those colorful vials.) If you really think that it was an animal that gave them the quills, find plenty of skeleton dogs and feed them to the chao. They reset the features that other animals give out. then, try again with new animals. You can find a skeleton dog on the "pumpkin hill" stage, near the church. It's a knuckles stage.

It could be because it does not trust you. If it is sleeping don't pick t up stand next to ti and whistle. Also don't throw him to get something off of it's head. Get a Dark person for a hero chao or a hero person for a dark chao also if it is neutral gat the opposite side to throw it to get something off of it's head.

Once you have spent enough time in the Chao Garden, your baby chao will sit down suddenly and become enveloped in a chao-shaped cocoon. The cocoon disappears after a few seconds, and your baby chao will have become an adult chao when it comes out. This is the point it reaches its maturity. Once out of the cocoon, your new adult chao will have a different shape, depending on which chaos drives you gave it and which characters raised it when it was a baby. (Hero or dark). If you continue to give it a certain kind of chaos drive, it will again change shape, but it will not go into a cocoon while doing so. It will only change shape slightly after it reaches age 3. Go see the doctor in the chao kindergarten to check its age. It will only change shape after age 3.
