After the divorce of Catherine of Aragon and Henry VIII she went to live in several dilapidated castles. She was sick for much of this time and in 1536, three years after Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn got married Catherine died of cancer.
After Henry secretly married Anne Boleyn in 1533, a special court convened at Dunstable Priory to rule over the legality of Henry's marriage to Catherine and declared the marriage illegal. In 1535 she was transferred to Kimbolton Castle where she confined herself to one room - she only left to attend Mass.
She was permitted to receive occasional visiters, but she was forbidden to see her daughter, Mary. They were also forbidden to write but sympathisers smuggled letters between the two. Henry offered the them better quarters and permission to see one another if they acknowledged his new Queen, but they refused.
Catherine of Aragon died on 7 January, 1536 at Kimbolton Castle, just a month after writing her final parting letters to both King Henry, and to her nephew the Emperor of Spain.
Catherine was buried in Petersborough Catherdral with the ceremony due to a Dowager Princess of Wales, not a queen. King Henry did not attend the funeral and refused to allow their daughter Mary to attend either. On the day of Catherine's funeral, Anne Boleyn miscarried a son.
