While his mother cared for the rest of the family, Pelzer was starved, beaten, burned, and referred to as "the boy" and eventually, "it." His mother forced him eat his brother's feces, drink ammonia, and would hold his arm over a gas stove. She also stabbed him and dislocated his arm. Mrs. Pelzer would explain the incidents as if they were accidents on behalf of David. When she dislocated his arm, she told the doctor the dramatic story that David was falling off the top bunk of his bunk bed and she ran to catch him, but she was just a tad too late.
