Most East Berliners who were trying to escape were shot or imprisoned; only the lucky ones survived the treacherous and, mostly, deadly dash to freedom.
west berliners began fleeing into east berlin
There was almost 1.5 million East Berliners by Aug 1961, when the wall was erected.
it's not that it was trashy. the west-berliners didn't really like it there so they vandalized it. kind of a type of protest against the communist side i guess you could say. east-berliners weren;t even allowed NEAR! the wall. there was a chainlink fence and armed guards ready to take out anyone who tried to escape to the democratic west berlin. communist just wanted to prove they were better, which they weren;t b/c people kept trying to escape. so it was more "decorated" than "trashy" so to speak.
East Berliners and West Berliners now peacefully co-exist. When the Communist Party was attempting to drive the Allies out of Berlin, they used various tactics such as intimidation and staged rallies to try to control the city. When that failed, they simply walled off that part of the city under occupation by the Soviets, and set up their own city government. A number of people were killed trying to escape to West Berlin from East Berlin.
Yes, East Berliners could write letters both domestically within East Germany and internationally. However, the mail system was subject to censorship and monitoring by the East German government, which could open and read letters to ensure they did not contain any dissenting political content.
Looking out of the window.
Because many countries would not trade with a communist nation, East Berliners did not have a lot of the latest technology. They did not have designer clothes or expensive cars. It was also hard for them to get certain kinds of foods. For instance, many East Berliners had never had a banana before the Wall fell because East Germany could not get them from anywhere.
As part of the means of stopping East Berliners escaping to the West.
They tried their best to get to the West side of Germany; the U.S., French, British, controlled side.
The repression and isolation of East Berliners led to a pervasive sense of fear and distrust among the population, as citizens were subjected to surveillance and limited freedoms. This stifled creativity and dissent, resulting in a culture of conformity and resignation. Additionally, the economic stagnation and lack of opportunities drove many to seek escape, leading to a significant brain drain and a longing for the freedoms enjoyed in the West. Ultimately, this repression contributed to widespread discontent, culminating in the 1989 protests that eventually led to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
about the same reason East German people tried to escape to West Germany. FREEDOM of body, mind and thought......................as opposed to slavery
West Berlin became prosperous while East Berlin struggled with communist pigheadedness and incompetence. Nobody tried to escape from West Berlin to East Berlin.
