In Washington Irving's "The Devil and Tom Walker," the first clue of Tom's plans is when he tells his wife about the Devil, she goes, probably as he predicted, to try to make a deal of her own. He goes to look for her and is not that surprised that only a few scattered body parts are all that are left of his wife. The second instance is when Tom, who is nearing the end of his life, seeks to outsmart the Devil by suddenly becoming devout and carrying around a Bible.
