Most notable were the 9/11 attacks, when Muslim extremists from an organization called al-Qa`idah hijacked four commercial passenger jets and succeeded in piloting two of them into the twin towers of the World Trade Center and a third one into the Pentagon (the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania, the martyred passengers having thwarted the intended attack on a fourth target in Washington). The total killed in the four planes and the three buildings was about 3000 men, women and children. The United States and its allies launched a retaliatory war that they like to call the "war on terror". After the end of Bush's presidency, the United States succeeded in assassinating Osama bin Laden, the leader and financier of al-Qa`idah, on May 1, 2011.

While that war was going on, President Bush started another war, to aid the people of Iraq by ending the tyrannical reign of their oppressive leader, Saddam Hussein.

Just before the end of Bush's presidency, the largest economic downturn to hit the United States since the Great Depression of the 1930s began, resulting mainly from years of bad loan decisions in the mortgage industry. The problem was compounded by the succeeding president, who thought that the way to fix a problem that resulted from spending large amounts of money that we don't have is by spending large amounts of money that we don't have.
