On May 18, 1980, the eruption of Mt. saint Helen in south west Washington state, disrupted the lives of thousands and changed more than 200 sq. miles of rich forest into a grey, lifeless landscape. More than 26 yrs. later the land around the mountain heals it self slowly.
The eruption started at may 18 1980 at 8:32 am
The mountain, before eruption was about 9677 feet and now it is about 8363 feet
57 people were killed in the eruption and 21 bodies were never recovered
7000 big game animals, millions of birds,12 million salmon and small mammals were also killed.
Wow, this is a tough one - 57 people perished, a cubic mile of the mountain blew away or slide down into the valley, eventually 5 visitor centers and a $200 million highway were built to see it. Lets just say it was crazy!
57 people killed, 250 homes, 47 bridges, 15 miles of railways destroyed. 185 miles (298km) of highways were destroyed. The volcano destroyed its own summit and left a large crater in its place. It was the most economically destructive volcano event of the united states

It is likely that Mount St. Helens will erupt again in the upcoming years, and unfortunately, there is no way to prevent this occurrence. However, when an eruption is impending, the USGS will provide short-term forecasts and warnings. This way, people in the area will be able to evacuate.
No, because no such thing is possible!

With enough warning the population can be evacuated. Emergency response can be set up. There may be nothing to do to stop it but there are many things that can be done to prepare. Mount st. Helens is a good example
