The Romans went to the baths most days and spent an average of two hours there. They started with doing exercises or playing sport at the gym of the baths. Bathing was a long process. They started with a cold-plunge bath in the frigidarium (cold room). It continued with sitting in a warm room tepidarium (tepid room) to prepare for the hot bath which was taken in the caldarium (hot room). Older baths also has a laconicum, a sweating room, a bit like a sauna.
Washing was done separately and a stirgil (scraper) was used to scrape off dead skin. The routine ended with a massage.
Bigger baths also had a swimming pool, a library and rooms for poetry readings and other performances.
