Austria - actively encouraged by Germany - sought to humiliate and if possible defeat Serbia which it held responsible for the assassination. When Serbia decided it could not meet Austria's demands, war was declared on Serbia.

Russia, the self-declared champion of the Slavs, then declared in response it would mobilize its troops.

Since there were a number of treaties in force - one between Russia, France and the UK and another between Germany and Austria - that made each country promise it would mobilize and help the other in case of war, that meant that Germany, the UK and France also had to prepare for war.

Germany already had been working for years on a plan (the Schlieffen plan) on how to defeat the French quickly if the opportunity for another war would arise.

The plan was put in action, meaning the start of WWI.
