Initially the Romans, whose troops were stationed in the nearby city of Utica which had defected to them, demanded that Carthage hand over all her weapons and armour. Carthage complied. However, the Romans then demanded that Carthage be moved ten miles inland and that the original city be burned. Carthage refused because she was a trading city and could not afford to leave the sea. The Romans immediately besieged the city. Carthage resisted and started making new weapons. The siege lasted three years. The city was destroyed and 50,000 Carthaginians who survived starvation during the siege and the storming of the city were promised that they would not be killed, but were sold as slaves. Rome took over the remaining Carthaginian territories, Tunisia and western Libya. The destruction of Carthage had been the war aim of Rome.
