The year was 1912. William Howard Taft was seeking a second term. Theodore Roosevelt, Republican president just before Taft, disliked Taft's policies and wanted to push his own, so he campaigned for the Republican nomination. He lost, but instead of supporting Taft, he formed a new party and ran against Taft and the Democrat Wilson. He still had a lot of support and ran a good campaign, splitting the Republican vote. In fact, he got more votes than Taft, but allowed Wilson to win the election.
