In a Victorian work house children, adults and elderly went to work in a workhouse if they were poor or badly ill. If they broke the rules then they would be put in a cage in a dark room, fined of even put into prison!

a Victorian workhouse is a house that people worked in during the Victorian times. People worked in them to earn money and so that they got a job. :)

Victorian workhouses were for people who were poor and did not have a home. Laws stated that no person who was able to work, would get help unless they lived in one of these workhouses.
