That has been the subject of a great number of books of history, philosophy, economics, mathematics and ethics. And every other subject you can think of.

In VERY brief:

1914 was the beginning of what was then called the Great War, before people realized that we were going to have to number them. World War I wasn't really a WORLD war, since most of the participants were European, but it did get the attention of people around the world. This war lasted for 3 years, until November 1918, costing the lives of millions. Of lasting impact and as a direct result of the war, the Russian Tsar was overthrown and executed, and the Bolshevik branch of Leninism came to power with terrifying effects.

The Great Depression of 1929 was caused, indirectly, by long-delayed effects of the Treaty of Versailles, which ended WWI. The payment of "war reparations" by the defeated Germany crippled the German economy, with domino-like effects to the rest of the nations. The collapse of the German government in 1933, while the rest of the world was in economic chaos allowed Adolph Hitler to be elected as Chancellor, a post he would hold until May 1945. The economic troubles also affected the Asian economies, which led to the militarization of Japan.

In the United States, the economic problems were coupled with agricultural problems including long drought in the midwest. The nickname the "Dust Bowl" was given to the parched and unproductive soil, and thousands of farm families were forced to leave their homes and look for other work. In Russia, now called the "Union of Soviet Socialist Republics", forced collectivization of farms caused mass famine and lead to the deaths of 20+ million Russian and Ukrainian peasants.

Under Hitler, Germany embarked on a course of expansionism and empire building in Europe and Africa. In 1939, the nations of Germany and the Soviet Union attacked and divided Poland, precipitating a second Great War, WWII. Germany then attacked France and England, occupying most of France and subjecting Great Britain to a sustained air attack. When this attack failed, Germany then attacked the Soviet Union in May 1941.

IN December 1941, Japanese aircraft launched from six aircraft carriers attacked the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawai'i, making this a truly "world war". During the course of the war, several million civilians were killed; in total, probably 50 million deaths were attributable to armed conflict during the war years of 1939-1945. After the collapse of Germany at the hands of British, Soviet and American forces in May 1945, the only major conflicts were in and around the Japanese islands, and Japan prepared itself for invasion be becoming a fortress island. To bring the Pacific war to a quick end, the United States developed weapons powered the fission of uranium and plutonium, and two nuclear bombs were dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan in early August 1945. The war ended three days later.

In 1914, aircraft were limited to lighter-than-air dirigibles and tiny, flimsy heavier-than-air airplanes. The wars and inter-war rearmaments lead to vast improvements in air travel, including the development of large airliners, fast and maneuverable fighter aircraft, and bombers capable of dropping several tons of bombs - including the nuclear bombs mentioned above.

In medicine, in 1914 there were very few antibiotics; by 1945, penicillin and sulfa drugs were available, and infections were no longer routine killers.

In 1914, radio was used only by hobbyists; by 1945, radio broadcasts spanned the world and brought news and music to everybody.

The 1920s, 1930s and 1940s brought the dawn of the Hollywood era, and brought sound and color to the movies.
