During the last war (Mexican-American War, 1846-1848), Mexico lost to the US, losing half its territory, including all the present-day Southwest.
During the last battle, the US occupied the Mexican port of Veracruz (1914). The reason would be a laughable misunderstanding, if not by the fact that people died on both sides (22 Americans, 172 Mexicans).

Miguel Hidalgo was the first man to fight for Mexico's independence. He fought for 2 years then was captured and decapitated. The second man to fight was Jose. He fought for 4 years and then died. The last man to fight and win Mexico's independence was Augustus de Iturbide. He originally was on the side of Spain who was fighting against Mexico at the time but suddnely thought "Hey, if I win these guys independence I can be their emporer."
