Humorist Will Rogers and aviator Wiley Post died shortly after take-off near Point Barrow, Alaska. An ardent supporter of flight, Rogers was named "the patron saint of aviation." His travels by air took him around the world, including Japan. In 1934, he said, "If war was declared, we would lose the Philippines before lunch, but if we lose these islands it will be our own fault."
