They actually refer to the same vessel, the complete name was the CSS H.L. Hunley. This Confederate submarine attacked the USS Housatonic and sank it before sinking itself with a loss of all hands.

I believe what you are looking for is the well known CSS Virginia (better known as the Merrimac). Another well known confederate vessel was the CSS Hunley, the first submarine to sink an enemy ship.

The CSS Hunley was the submarine that the Confederates built and tested. I believe it was the FIRST one. It sunk after setting an explsion under a Union ship. It was recently retrieved and is being restored.

After making several attempts to attach explosives to Royal Navy warships anchored at New York, the craft was lost.During the US Civil War, a submarine known as the CSS Hunley was successful in attacking the USS Housatonicwhile at anchor in Charleston Harbor. The Hunley sunk not too long after. Years later, divers looking at the Housatonic wreck found the wreck of the Hunley with the skeletons of her crew still inside.
