When the western part of the Roman Empire collapsed European civilization went into a tailspin. The knowledge and abilities that the ancients had discovered/developed were lost to all but a select few. People were concerned with staying alive rather than with cultural pursuits.

It was the western part of the empire that collapsed. The eastern part of the empire continued to exist for another 1,000 years.

Kingdoms were established in the lands of the western part of the empire by the people who invaded it. The Frankish kingdom of the Franks eventually took over the whole of Gaul. The Visigoths established the Visigoth kingdom in Spain and Portugal and the Vandals established their own kingdom in North Africa. In England the Angles and Saxons established several kingdoms.

Zeno, the emperor of the Easter Roman Empire, sent Theodoric the Great, the king of the Ostrogoths to Italy to depose Odoacer and rule Italy on his behalf. Odoacer was the leader of a rebellion which overthrew the last emperor of the west and was ruling Italy. Italy came under the Ostrogoth kingdom. Later, another emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire (Justinian the Great) wanted to take Italy and fought the Ostrogoths. In these Gothic Wars the Ostrogoths lost and were destroyed, but parts of northern Italy were devastated. Soon after this, the Lombards invaded Italy.
