-discovered the world wasn't flat-named the Pacific Ocean-out of 5 ships only 1 survive the trip
roughly 23,000 miles... im actually not sure but its a slightly educated guess.
Though born into Portuguese nobility, Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521) was sailing for Spain's King Charles I, having been refused support by Emmanuel I of Portugal. In 1519, Magellan captained the first circumnavigation of the world, but died during the voyage in 1521 while battling natives in the Philippines. Only 1 of his 5 ships and 18 of his 250 men completed the journey back to Spain in 1522.
To make the first complete circumnavigational trip around the world by boat. 5 ships left Spain commended by Ferdinand Magellan. He was killed in the Philippines by the natives. However, one of the five ships did manage to sail around the world sailing in a eastern direction, until it returned to Spain.
The names of his crew members are unknown because his voyage happened so long ago and there are probably not any documents surving today that tell the names of his crew members.
