Ritter von Thoma served in the German Army in both World Wars and in the Spanish Civil War and reached the rank of General. During World War 2 he served in the German invasion of Poland and the in the invasion of the Soviet Union before being transfered to North Africa. He was captured by the British on 4 November 1942 west of El Alamain after his tank was hit and set on fire. He spent the rest of the war in prison camps in Great Britain and was repatriated to Germany on 25 November 1947. He died of a heart attack in 1948.
