When she was taken to her trial, she spoke to the people of France how she felt. Then, she made a speech to the mothers of France talking about what it felt like to her to lose her children, she loved them. On the platform, she accidentally stepped on the executioner's foot. Her last words were, "Pardon me, Monsieur"
Because the revolutionaries wanted to have her killed, they needed a good reason to get her condemned to the guillotine. From all of the crimes they had accused her off, there was no evidence, because it was all untrue. The only thing they did find, was the fact that she committed treason, but only to try to save her life and that of her husband and children. Therefore, they made something up, something so revolting that all of the French people would think of her as a monster instead of as a woman. They abused Marie Antoinette's captured son and made him drink alcohol. When he was drunk, they made him sign a paper that said he admitted that his mother and aunt had sexually abused him, and thus committed incest. During her trial Marie Antoinette heard this allegation for the first time and did not respond to it when the judge asked her what her reply would be to it. When he asked her why she did not respond, she said: ' because Nature refuses to answer such a charge brought against a Mother, I appeal to all the Mothers that are here.' It worked, the woman in the audience felt sorry for her. She was quickly carried away back to prison, but the verdict had already been established long before the trail had begun: she was to be executed on grounds of treason.
