Due to excesses committed by the royal court, many generals including Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, Vicente Guerrero and Guadalupe Victoria decided to switch from a monarchy to a federal republic. This was established at the Plan of Casa Mata, established on February 1st, 1823. This plan effectively overthrew emperor Agustin de Iturbide and established Mexico as a republic.
