In 1658, Shah Jahan fell ill and followed the War of Succession between his four sons, Dara Shukoh, Shah Shuja, Aurangzeb and Murad Bakshsh. After his victory, Aurangzeb ascended the throne, after confining Shah Jahan in the Agra fort.
His third son Aurangzeb succeeded Shah Jahan in 1658, while he was still alive. Shah Jahan was confined until his death in 1666.
