The army of ancient Carthage used war elephants effectively. Enemy forces feared them very much. There were situations, however, where the war elephant would go wild, even trampling Carthage's soldiers. This was handled in the Second Punic War by having their drivers armed with a hammer and spike to kill the elephant that became a danger to the Carthage soldiers.
